Bulk vs. Bagged Mulch: Which Is Cheaper?
Neither format is always less expensive. Bagged mulch is easy to carry and buy in small quantities. Bulk can be convenient for larger areas, but delivery charges and minimum orders can change the comparison. Use the quotes available where you live.
Compare on the same coverage basis
Start with area and depth. Convert square feet multiplied by depth in inches and divided by 12 to cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. Add an allowance for settling, uneven ground, and handling only if it fits your project.
Worked example
For 300 square feet at 3 inches deep, the base volume is 75 cubic feet, or about 2.78 cubic yards. With a 10% allowance, plan for 82.5 cubic feet (3.06 cubic yards). At 2 cubic feet per bag, that means 42 whole bags. Compare 42 times your per-bag price plus bag delivery against the bulk quote plus delivery. If a supplier’s minimum is above 3.06 yards, use the billed minimum.
What to include
- Bag size and current local price, not a different size’s price.
- Bulk price unit, delivery fee, and minimum quantity.
- Access, unloading, and how much material you can store or spread.
Common mistakes
Do not compare an undelivered bulk price with a bag total that includes delivery. Check that both quotes cover the same volume and that bag sizes are stated in cubic feet.
