How Many Bags of Mulch Do I Need?

Use the same units throughout: measure the planting area in square feet, choose a depth in inches, and check the cubic-foot volume printed on the bag.

Three steps to a bag count

  1. Find area by multiplying length by width. Split irregular shapes into manageable rectangles and add them.
  2. Calculate cubic feet: area times depth divided by 12. Multiply by 1 plus your allowance percentage divided by 100.
  3. Divide by bag volume and round up, because partial bags are not generally available.

Worked example

A 10 by 12 foot bed is 120 square feet. At 3 inches deep, it takes 30 cubic feet before allowance. A 10% allowance makes 33 cubic feet. With 2-cubic-foot bags, 33 divided by 2 is 16.5, so plan for 17 bags.

Depth and coverage notes

Depth depends on the purpose and existing surface. Product size, settling, and irregular edges affect actual coverage. Avoid piling mulch against trunks or building siding; check suitable application guidance for your plants and site.
