Raised Garden Bed Soil: Bags vs. Bulk Delivery

Bagged soil offers manageable units and may suit a small bed or limited access. Bulk soil may reduce packaging and handling for larger quantities, but compare a local delivered quote and ask what blend is supplied.

Calculate before comparing

Get total cubic feet for all beds by adding length times width times fill depth for each one. Convert depth to feet, add a realistic allowance, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. This gives a common unit for comparing bags with a bulk quote.

Worked example

Two 4 by 8 beds filled 11 inches deep have a base volume of 58.67 cubic feet. A 10% allowance gives about 64.53 cubic feet, or 2.39 cubic yards. At 1.5 cubic feet per bag, that is 44 whole bags. Compare 44 times your bag price against the quoted bulk amount, delivery, and any minimum order.

Ask about the material

Soil blends vary. Ask about composition, intended use, screening, delivery placement, and whether stated volume is loose or settled. A low cost is not helpful if the material is unsuitable for your plants or site.
